Department of Music History

Since 2003, the Department of Music History has been part of the Ethnological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, one of the public research organisations in the Academy’s system of scholarly institutes. Its main aim is to conduct research in the field of history of Czech and European music culture from the Middle-Ages, focusing on long-term projects of critical editions of music sources, with an emphasis on music of the 18th–20th centuries.

An additional activity that reaches beyond the department due to its international character is regular processing of the national musicological bibliography and sending the information to the RILM database. Hana Vlhová-Wörner is the current head of the department. Jan Kachlík is the leader of the Dvořák research team.

The editorial office of the Hudební věda journal is also located in the Department of Music History.
